This is the plate that listed the plates.
Curtis had his printer engrave the Table of Contents for Portfolio Two of The North American Indian into copper — the same copper used to print the photogravure images themselves. Every title on this plate corresponded to a large-format image: portraits of warriors, ceremonial figures, landscapes that defined how the world would come to see the American West.
Some of those images now trade at auction for hundreds of thousands of dollars. The plate that announced them has outlasted the portfolios, the publishers, and the era. It is still here. The list is still readable in the copper.
There is no other plate like this in the collection. Every other plate carries an image. This one carries names.
This is the first time a Table of Contents plate has been offered from this collection. The price reflects its singular place within the Portfolio series.
